What is Essential Oil?
Essential Oil is a completely pure, aromatic, concentrated natural
oil that has been extracted (most often using steam distillation)
from various plants, flowers, leaves, woods and grasses.
Due to their therapeutic effects, essential oils are commonly used
in aromatherapy for the holistic healing of body, mind and spirit.
Various methods of use include steam inhalation, room diffusion,
addition to baths and, with the addition of carrier oil to reduce
its strength, for massage and personal care.
Essential oil is very concentrated and should be used with
care and respect. Always dilute for use on the skin. The
exception to this rule is with Lavender and Tea Tree which may
be applied, undiluted, one drop to the area. Remember, less IS
more. When using essential oil, use the smallest amount that will get the job done. If one drop will get
the job done, don't use two drops.
Although aromatherapy should not be considered a miracle
cure for serious emotional issues,
the proper use of essential oil may enhance your emotional
outlook, provide support and help balance your emotions
during the day.
Essential oil is not the same as fragrance oil. Where
essential oil is a completely pure oil, derived from true plants, fragrance oil
is a created fragrance and does not offer the same therapeutic benefits that
essential oil offers.

Fill aromatherapy oil burners or oil warmers with water and add a
few drops of oil.
~ An essential oil dropped onto an
oil ring or
light bulb will fill the room with a wonderful fragrance and
create a calming and uplifting mood (don't put essential oil in
the socket.)
~
Use essential oils in the bath. Add 3-8 drops to the tub
(depending on the oil) just before you get in. Soak for at least
10 minutes.
~
Create your own bath salts. Add 3-6 drops to 1/4 cup of sea
salt, epsom salt or baking powder (or a combination of all
three) and mix.
~
Six to eight drops of eucalyptus oil in the bath cools the body
in summer and protects it in winter.
~
Use oils as an inhalant...eucalyptus for congestion, peppermint
or sandalwood for stress. Put 4 drops in a bowl of hot, almost
boiling water. Drape a towel over your head to make a tent and
breathe in the steam for a few minutes.
~
Using lemon, mint or tea tree, make a foot bath with 5-7 drops
of oil in a quart of warm water. Soak for about 10 minutes.
~
Combine 20 drops of oil with 5 oz of water in a spray bottle to
make a room spray, or add a drop or two to a basket of dried flowers.
~
Put a drop of oil on a hot incandescent light bulb. Do NOT use
with halogen lights.
~ For tired, aching muscles or arthritis
aches, mix 1 oz cinnamon, sage and basil oil to 4 oz sweet
almond or other vegetable oil and use as a massage oil.
~
For good smelling towels, sheets, etc, place a few drops of
essential oil onto a small piece of terry cloth and toss into
the clothes dryer while drying. Or add 5 drops of oil to 1/4 cup
fabric softener or water and place in the center cup of the
washer.
~ Potpourri which has lost its scent can be revived by adding a
few drops of essential oil.
~
Add a few drops of essential oil to a pan of water and simmer on
the stove or in a potpourri pot.
~
Add 10 drops of essential oil to a box of cornstarch or baking
soda, mix very well, let set for a day or two and then sprinkle
over your carpets. Let set for an hour or more, then vacuum.
~
Put a few drops of lemon or pine oil on a
cotton ball and place it in your vacuum cleaner bag. Rose or
geranium works well with pet odors.
~
Refresh shoes by putting a few drops of essential oil directly
into the shoes. Or place a cotton ball, dabbed with a few drops
of lemon oil, into the shoes.
~
Have athlete's foot? Tea tree is a great healer!
~
To fragrance your kitchen cabinets and drawers, place a cotton
ball, dabbed with your favorite essential oil, in an
inconspicuous corner.
~
One or two drops of true lavender oil or
tea tree oil, applied directly to cuts, scrapes or scratches,
will promote healing.
~
To eliminate a wart, apply one drop of lemon essential oil
directly to the wart, daily, until it is gone.
~ Selling your home? Fragrance sells! Fill
the kitchen area with the aroma of spices...simmer a few drops
of the essential oils of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove or vanilla.
Geranium oil sprinkled throughout the home creates a warm,
cheerful and inviting mood. Add cinnamon oil to furniture polish
and wipe down the wood.
~
Place 1 or 2 drops of sleep-enhancing oils, such as chamomile or
lavender, on your pillow before retiring for restful sleep.
~
A blend of lavender and grapefruit essential oil is good
for the office. Lavender creates a calm, tranquil atmosphere
while grapefruit stimulates the senses and clears up stale
air.
~
To alleviate anxiety and depression, blend geranium and
lavender oils and use in an aromatherapy warmer, burner or
reed diffuser. Or, add 6-8 drops to the bath.
~ Be cautious when putting essential oils on your skin,
particularly citrus oils. They are highly concentrated and can
cause serious reactions. It is strongly suggested that you not
use any undiluted essential oils on your skin.
~
Some oils can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. When
using a new oil for the first time, test for skin sensitivity by
doing a patch test. Place a small amount of the diluted
essential oil (never use essential oils undiluted on the skin)
on the inside of your elbow. Wait 24 hours to see if there is
any itching, redness or other form of reaction. Even if a
particular essential oil is not known to cause irritation, this
step should not be ignored.
~
Store essential oils away from heat and light. Refrigerate all
vegetable oils.
~
Keep all essential oils away from your eyes, nose and mouth.
~
Wash your hands after using essential oils.
~
Keep essential oils out of the reach of children and pets. Treat
the oils like medicines that are poison in unknowing hands or
mouths.
~
Use extreme care when using essential oils on pregnant women,
children, the elderly or anyone with health problems.
~
Essential oils are flammable. Please keep them out of the way of fire
hazards.
Although aromatherapy should not be considered a miracle
cure for serious emotional or physical issues,
the proper use of essential oil may enhance your emotional
outlook, provide support, help balance your emotions
during the day and ease some physical symptoms.
