Singing Bowls & Tingshas: Himalayan Singing Bowls, Tibetan Singing Bowls, Meditation Bowls, Singing Bowl Cushions, Tibetan Tingshas & Bells |
Singing Bowls, also known as Himalayan Singing
Bowls, Tibetan Singing Bowls, Nepal Singing Bowls or Buddhist
Singing Bowls, are actually a type of standing bell. Rather than
hanging, standing bells rest on their bottom surface. By rubbing the
sides and rim of a Singing Bowl with a wooden or leather wrapped
mallet, the Singing Bowl vibrates to produce a harmonious, calming
hum.Traditionally used as instruments and meditation tools, Singing Bowls are now widely used for relaxation, meditation, health care and well-being, as well as for religious practices. The pure sounds produced, when the rim of the Singing Bowl is rubbed by the mallet, is said to put the brain into a meditative state. The vibrations of the singing bowls have the same wavelength found in the brainwaves, producing feelings of relaxation. Singing Bowls are made of metal that can oxidize by water and air. This is considered part of the natural aging of the product. Tibetan Tingshas are small cymbals, traditionally used in prayer and rituals by Tibetan Buddhist practitioners. The two cymbals, joined together with a leather strap, are struck together, producing a unique, clear, long ringing tone. Tingshas are now being used, along with Singing Bowls, as musical instruments and meditation and sound-healing tools. See: How to Play a Singing Bowl |

How to Play a Singing BowlPlaying a Singing Bowl can be a relaxing, enjoyable and inspiring experience. Sound is very beneficial to our health and well-being; the rich sonic harmonious vibrations of Singing Bowls are perfect for meditation, achieving serenity, staying in the moment and focusing within.Singing Bowls make their sound (or sing) by gently striking the bowl at the rim with its mallet or by rubbing the mallet around the rim. The concept is much like rubbing your finger around the rim of a glass to produce vibrations. Different Singing Bowls make different sounds, based on the type of mallet used and the shape of the bowl. 1. Find a calm, quiet location, where you can be alone and make your body comfortable. Close your eyes for a moment, be quietly aware of your breathing and bring your body and mind to a serene state. 2. Rest the Singing Bowl on the flat of your palm; do not grasp it with your fingers. 3. Press the mallet firmly against the rim of the Singing Bowl. Keeping constant, even pressure on the bowl, slowly move the mallet around the outside rim of the Singing Bowl and you will soon hear the bowl hum. If the hum sounds choppy or inconsistent, slow the pace of the mallet's movement. If the mallet loses contact with the bowl, the singing may stop, in which case you may need to start over. 4. Singing Bowls may come to full volume in a few seconds, others may take 10 seconds or more. By adjusting the speed and angle of the mallet, you can alter the sounds. Finding the proper balance of angle, speed and pressure to make your Singing Bowl sing takes practice...a good exercise for learning patience! |
